Live more vertically

So often I find myself striving to solve my struggles with my own resources — my strength, my knowledge, my finances — forgetting to consult the One who created the universe and knows what's best in every situation. In my pride, I try to live horizontally — taking God out of the equation entirely and setting myself up on the throne of my heart.

Living vertically means looking to the Lord for wisdom first, before running off on our own. I created the Vertically app to help me focus on what really matters first thing every day, and let the One who knows what's best direct my steps.

Frequently asked questions

If you have anything else you want to ask, reach out to me.

    • What does "Living Vertically" even mean?

Living vertically means looking to God for guidance and wisdom before trying to solve problems on our own. Instead of living "horizontally" — taking God out of the equation — we look to the Lord for solutions first.

    • Why the Lord's Prayer?

In Matthew Chapter 6, Jesus taught his disciples how to pray. It's a wonderful way to begin living vertically because each part of that prayer helps you focus on the Lord in some way.

    • Why an app?

I wrote Vertically to have something simple to help me focus my efforts to live vertically, and I thought I would share it with others in the hope that it would help them to do so as well.

    • How should I use the Vertically application?

Every morning before opening email or news, get a cup of coffee (or tea), turn on the ambient background music in the app, and spend time praying through the sections. Praying first helps center your thoughts in the right place.

    • How can I use this on my computer?

Vertically is available as a web application at app.verticallyapp.com.

    • Does the content change daily?

Yes, the content changes daily. While the Lord's Prayer doesn't change, Vertically rotates through different verses and messages on each page. If you're consistent, you'll see them all over time.

    • Will you add more content?

Yes, I plan to add more content over time. I have been collecting a list of verses and thoughts that I'd like to add to the app. I've been focusing on the core functionality first, but I will be adding more content in the future.

    • Why did you use the New Living Translation?

Because it reads easily and is the version used most often in our church's Sunday services.

    • What is the significance of the icon?

The inspiration for the icon was the sunrise, hence the colors. The two vertical lines represent the Lord and I, spending time together. They also form a stretched "pause" symbol — a reminder to pause and spend that time.

    • What about the color schemes?

The gradient color schemes are meant to look like the various colors of the sunrise. The other color schemes are monochromatic and respond to your phone's light or dark mode setting.

    • I have another question. Where do I go?
